Dynasty Warriors: Origins: Open World or Not?
For most of its history, the *Dynasty Warriors* series has been known for its linear hack-and-slash gameplay. However, recent entries like *Dynasty Warriors 9* introduced an open world, which led to mixed reactions. This raises the question: Does *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* also feature an open world?
Does Dynasty Warriors: Origins Have An Open World?
No, *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* does not have an open world.
In recent years, many AAA titles have embraced the open-world format, often equating it with enhanced quality. However, this isn't always beneficial. A prime example is *Dynasty Warriors 9*, which received criticism for its vast, yet empty world. The expansive design diluted the impact of the series' signature large-scale battles, making them feel less engaging. This was a clear case of an unnecessary mechanic being forced into a game that thrived on a different structure.
Given the experimental nature of *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, fans were curious if it would follow the same path. Fortunately, it does not. Instead of an open world, the game features an overworld for navigation between missions.
Between missions, players can explore a compact map of ancient China, moving from town to town to buy weapons and items, and rest at inns. These maps are small enough to traverse in under a minute, and while there is a fast travel option, it's hardly necessary due to the map's size. Here, players can interact with NPCs to start side quests, find items like Pyroxene and Old Coins, engage in optional battles to improve proficiency and recruit new soldiers, and trigger cutscenes to advance the story. This streamlined approach is more effective and less cumbersome than a sprawling open world with little to do.
*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
