"Elder Scrolls Online Introduces Subclasses After 11 Years of Fan Demand"
The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a much-anticipated feature that fans have been requesting for over a decade: subclasses. This exciting addition promises to enhance gameplay and offer more customization options. Dive in to discover how subclasses work and what future updates await in this beloved MMORPG.
Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates
Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, The Elder Scrolls Online has unveiled a major update during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. The introduction of subclassing is set to revolutionize how players approach the game. For years, the community has voiced their desire for the ability to switch between classes without starting over, especially when new skill trees are added. Now, Zenimax Online Studios is fulfilling this wish by introducing subclasses.
To access this feature, players need to reach level 50. Once achieved, they can retain one skill line from their original class and swap out the other two with any from the six other available classes. This flexibility results in over 3000 unique combinations, empowering players to tailor their characters to their preferred playstyle.
ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new feature, stating that extensive testing has been conducted. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, the team is satisfied with the current balance.
Seasons of the Worm Cult
Zenimax Online is also shifting to a seasonal content model, which Studio Director Matt Firor believes will allow for more experimentation and responsiveness to player feedback. He emphasized the studio's commitment to storytelling and innovation, saying, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."
The next chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, is a long-awaited sequel to the game's original Molag Bal storyline. Set on the new Isle of Solstice, players will delve into the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while Seasons of the Worm Cult will span most of the year, future seasons will typically last between 3 to 6 months. Zenimax plans to revisit past storylines with "remix" seasons, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season teased for the future.
