Evangelion Crossover Event Fails to Impress NIKKE Players

Jan 11,25

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion collaboration fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. Let's examine what went wrong with this August 2024 crossover event.

The Collaboration's Shortcomings

Shift Up acknowledges several flaws. While Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato appeared in costumes faithful to their original designs, player interest was underwhelming.

The initial character designs, created collaboratively by Shift Up and the Nikke team, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators. Subsequent modifications, while acceptable to the licensors, failed to resonate with the player base. The toned-down aesthetics lacked the appeal of the original concepts.

Player Feedback and Concerns

The issue wasn't solely the costumes. Players lacked sufficient incentive to purchase limited-time characters or skins, particularly given the skins' lack of significant visual differences from the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, was considered too similar to her standard appearance.

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE's success stems from its bold anime aesthetic and engaging narrative. Recent collaborations, however, are seen as diluting this core identity, diminishing player enthusiasm.

While NIKKE has a strong foundation, the uninspired collaboration designs and the event's overall pacing were criticized. Shift Up claims to be incorporating player feedback for future events, a promise players hope will be fulfilled.

You can find both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE on the Google Play Store. Hopefully, Shift Up will learn from this experience and deliver more compelling content in the future.
