GTA 6 Trailer 2: PS5 and Xbox Release Dates Confirmed, PC Details Omitted
The excitement surrounding the release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a major update to its official website has put a spotlight on the game's launch platforms and the newly announced release date of May 26, 2026. At the end of the trailer, the release date is prominently displayed alongside logos for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, confirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6's initial launch. Notably, the trailer was captured on a PS5, specifically mentioned as opposed to the PS5 Pro.
This focus on consoles has led to speculation and hope among fans about the potential for a simultaneous PC launch or even a release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Despite the delay to May 2026, there was an expectation that Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, might reconsider their strategy and opt for a day-and-date PC release. However, the absence of any PC mention in the trailer suggests that this might not be the case.
Rockstar's historical approach to game releases has typically involved launching on some platforms before expanding to others, a pattern that seems to be continuing with GTA 6. This omission of PC from the initial launch announcement, while consistent with past practices, feels increasingly outdated in the current gaming landscape. With the growing significance of the PC market for multiplatform game success, some view the exclusion of PC from GTA 6's launch as a potential missed opportunity.
In an interview with IGN in February, Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted at an eventual PC release for GTA 6. He referenced the simultaneous launch of Civilization 7 across multiple platforms, including PC, but noted that Rockstar's approach has historically been different. Zelnick's comments suggest that while a PC version is likely, it may not coincide with the console release.
Rockstar's relationship with the PC gaming community, particularly the modding scene, has been complex. Despite this, fans hoped that a game of GTA 6's magnitude could mark a shift in the studio's strategy. However, the timeline for a PC release remains uncertain, with speculation ranging from late 2026 to as late as May 2027.
A former Rockstar developer attempted to shed light on the decision to delay the PC version, urging PC gamers to be patient and give the studio the benefit of the doubt. Zelnick highlighted the significant contribution of PC sales to overall game revenue, noting that PC can account for up to 40% of sales, and possibly more for certain titles. He also acknowledged the growing importance of PC in what was traditionally a console-dominated market and predicted this trend would continue, even with the advent of new console generations.
As for the Nintendo Switch 2, there is no mention of it in GTA 6 Trailer 2, which aligns with expectations given the uncertainty around the capabilities of Nintendo's next-gen console. While the Switch 2 is set to receive titles like Cyberpunk 2077, and considering GTA 6's planned release on the less powerful Xbox Series S, there was some hope for a Switch 2 version. However, without any confirmation, fans will have to wait for further announcements.
