Xbox Series Price Hike: Key Games Hit $80 This Winter

Jul 03,26

Microsoft is implementing significant price increases across its Xbox product lineup.

The company announced today that price adjustments will affect Xbox consoles, controllers, headsets, and select game titles. While console and accessory price hikes took effect immediately on May 1st, game pricing will remain stable temporarily - though first-party titles are expected to reach $79.99 during the holiday season.

These adjustments apply worldwide, except for headset pricing which only increases in the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Microsoft provided IGN with this statement regarding the rationale behind the pricing changes:

"We recognize these adjustments present challenges, but they reflect careful evaluation of market conditions and rising development costs. Our commitment remains delivering greater gaming accessibility across platforms while maintaining value for Xbox players."

While the specific $80 first-party titles haven't been confirmed, potential candidates include the upcoming Call of Duty installment, the delayed Fable reboot (now targeting 2026), Perfect Dark's revival, inXile's Clockwork Revolution, Rare's Everwild (recently showcased by Xbox head Phil Spencer), Gears of War: E-Day from The Coalition, Hideo Kojima's OD, or State of Decay 3 from Undead Labs. Double Fine, creators of Psychonauts, also has an unannounced project underway.

Microsoft will showcase upcoming titles during June's Xbox Games Showcase 2025 and The Outer Worlds 2 Direct presentation.

This marks the first Series S price increase since its 2020 launch, following Microsoft's 2022 commitment to maintain pricing despite PlayStation's PS5 adjustments. While Xbox previously raised Series X pricing internationally (excluding the U.S.), this represents a broader pricing strategy shift alongside multiple Game Pass subscription hikes.

Though the scale of increases may surprise consumers, Microsoft's move mirrors industry trends. PlayStation recently implemented its second European/Australasian price adjustment in three years, continuing broader industry patterns.

The gaming sector has been gradually adjusting pricing structures, with premium game prices climbing from $60 to $70 since 2018. Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 exclusives like Mario Kart World reportedly target $80 price points, while the $450 console announcement drew criticism despite analysts acknowledging economic realities.

These developments occurred before Nintendo reevaluated its pricing strategy amid fluctuating U.S. tariffs. While the console retained its $450 MSRP, accessories faced adjustments. Industry analysts speculate about potential post-launch increases, with the Entertainment Software Association cautioning about broader impacts:

"The timing of Switch 2's reveal coinciding with tariff announcements created distorted media narratives. Gaming extends beyond consoles - encompassing VR, smartphones, and PCs. Any assumption this only affects Nintendo demonstrates fundamental misunderstanding."
"American manufacturers equally face border-crossing challenges for hardware and software production. These economic factors transcend individual companies, creating industry-wide pressures that will ultimately affect all gaming platforms."

Current market conditions suggest gaming will remain an increasingly expensive hobby across all platforms.
