Minecraft Movie Surpasses Super Mario Bros. with Record Video Game Film Debut
The Minecraft Movie has shattered box office records, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the title of the largest domestic debut for a video game adaptation. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, the latter also featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this Xbox game adaptation raked in an impressive $157 million in North American theaters. In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which still holds the record as the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever, opened with $146 million domestically back in April 2023.
Internationally, A Minecraft Movie added another $144 million to its tally, bringing its global opening weekend total to a staggering $301 million. With a production budget of $150 million, not including marketing expenses, the film appears to be on the path to profitability for Warner Bros.
A Minecraft Movie draws its inspiration from Mojang's Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time. Now owned by Microsoft, this sandbox game continues to captivate players worldwide and has even released movie tie-in DLC to coincide with the film's launch.
IGN's review of A Minecraft Movie awarded it a 6/10, noting that "Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess infuses A Minecraft Movie with a surprisingly specific and humorous comic twist, particularly in the more subdued first half of the film."

In other news, Disney's live-action Snow White has faced a disappointing start at the box office. It has earned $168.4 million globally, with $77.5 million from domestic markets and $90.9 million internationally. Given its hefty $250 million production budget, achieving a comeback similar to Mufasa: The Lion King might be out of reach.
