Renewed Hope for Heroes of Newerth: A Potential Comeback?

Following its 2022 shutdown, the classic MOBA Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is sparking renewed interest among fans thanks to recent activity from its developer on social media. While no official announcements have been made, the resurgence of activity after a three-year hiatus is fueling speculation about a potential revival.

The MOBA genre exploded in popularity following the success of Dota, a Warcraft 3 mod. Games like League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and HoN quickly gained traction. Unfortunately, HoN couldn't maintain its competitive edge and ultimately ceased operations. However, recent events suggest a possible return.

Personally, I gravitate towards the top/off-lane bruiser role in MOBAs, similar to Aatrox and Mordekaiser in League of Legends, or Axe, Sven, and Tidehunter in Dota 2. If that role is unavailable, I'm adaptable, though I prefer ranged carries over mid or support.

The first sign of a potential comeback was a social media post on January 1st, the first in over three years. The post, a simple "Happy NEW Year" with "NEW" capitalized, followed by subtle website updates featuring a silhouetted logo and animated particles, immediately caught the attention of the HoN community.

This wasn't a standalone event. On January 6th, a cryptic image of a large cracking egg was posted, further igniting speculation. Theories range from HoN hero integration into Dota 2 to the development of a mobile version.

The developer's recent social media engagement has undeniably rekindled excitement and demonstrates the enduring popularity of HoN. While the developer's intentions remain unclear, the possibility of HoN's return, and how it might fare against current top MOBAs, is undeniably intriguing.
