Nintendo Switch 2: Joy-Con Mouse Theory Gains Traction

Apr 06,25

The excitement surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning has reignited rumors about the potential use of Joy-Con controllers as a mouse. In the reveal trailer, a compelling scene shows a pair of detached Joy-Cons being placed onto a surface, attachment side down. They connect to flat-bottomed connectors and glide across the surface, much like a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one of the connectors, lending further credence to the theory.

Rumors have been circulating that the Nintendo Switch 2 might feature a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to those found in computer mice. While Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these speculations, the possibilities are intriguing. Fans have speculated that this feature could enhance gameplay for titles like Civilization, which are traditionally better suited to mouse and keyboard controls. Others believe that, given Nintendo's innovative approach, this could lead to unique applications in their first-party software.

Despite the uncertainty about the potential mouse support and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, we do have some solid information about the Nintendo Switch 2. It's officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, with a release planned for 2025. A new Mario Kart game is in development for the system, and it will be backward compatible with the original Switch. More details about the upcoming software will be shared at a Direct in April. You can find all our coverage on the Nintendo Switch 2 right here.
