"Oblivion Remake Announcement Imminent, Release to Follow Soon"

Excitement is building as Bethesda is reportedly gearing up to announce a remake of the beloved classic, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, in the coming weeks, with a release expected shortly thereafter. The news comes from NatetheHate, a reliable source who previously accurately predicted the announcement date of the Nintendo Switch 2. NatetheHate's tweet suggests the reveal could happen this month or next, a claim that has been corroborated by VGC. While the exact release window remains somewhat unclear, NatetheHate believes it could be before June, whereas VGC suggests a potential launch as early as April.

In January, Mp1st shed light on the project after a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio, accidentally released details about the Oblivion remake. Microsoft, when approached by IGN for comment, remained silent on the matter. According to Mp1st, Virtuos is using Unreal Engine 5 to completely overhaul Bethesda's iconic open-world RPG, indicating a comprehensive remake rather than a simple remaster. The report also detailed several gameplay changes, including modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD).

The changes to the gameplay mechanics are said to be inspired by action games and Soulslikes, aiming to address the original's "boring" and "frustrating" Blocking system. Sneak icons are now reportedly highlighted, with revamped damage calculations. The knockdown effect from depleted Stamina is harder to trigger, and the HUD has been redesigned for better clarity. Additionally, hit reactions have been added to enhance responsiveness, and Archery has been modernized for both first and third-person perspectives.

Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023 when documents from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial over the Activision Blizzard acquisition were made public. These documents listed several unannounced Bethesda projects planned for release in the coming years. Compiled in July 2020, before Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, the list included an Oblivion Remaster slated for the 2022 financial year, alongside other titles like an Indiana Jones game.

However, many of these projects faced delays or cancellations. Doom Year Zero evolved into Doom: The Dark Ages, set to launch in May, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle didn't see the light of day until December 2024. The Elder Scrolls 6 also missed its projected financial year 2024 release. The document referred to the Oblivion project as a remaster, but it appears the scope may have expanded into a full-fledged remake.

As for the platforms, with Microsoft now embracing multiplatform releases and the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, the Oblivion remake could potentially be available on more than just PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. If the Switch 2 launches around June, the Oblivion remake might even be part of its launch lineup.
