The gaming community's response to Randy Pitchford's $80 Borderlands 4 comment has intensified, with publishers joining the discussion. Meanwhile, Pitchford redirected attention to his previous statements, stating: "If you want the truth, here it is."

Publishers Capitalize on Controversy

Devolver Digital, known for its unconventional marketing, seized the opportunity to promote Mycopunk. The publisher responded to IGN's coverage with: "You're gonna be able to buy Mycopunk for you and three of your friends for the price of one copy of Borderlands 4."

Pitchford engaged with the tweet, humorously comparing the game's cost to narcotics: "Mycopunk is cheaper than a point of meth - probably has fewer side effects, too!"

Community Reacts

The response to Pitchford's remarks has been overwhelmingly negative. Players expressed frustration through comments like:

  • "I am going to pirate Borderlands 4"
  • "Please stop. Just apologize and move on"
  • "BL4 had so much hype and it's being ruined in a day"

Pitchford's PAX East Explanation

The Gearbox CEO previously addressed pricing concerns during PAX East, stating:

"Game budgets are increasing... Borderlands 4 has more than twice the development budget than Borderlands 3. I don't know what the price will be."

Pitchford emphasized their philosophy of delivering value while acknowledging production costs:

"We want everyone who buys a Gearbox game to feel they got the better end of the bargain... Borderlands is amazing and worth it."

Industry Response

Borderlands streamer Moxsy commented:

"Fans want to feel good supporting a franchise they've loved for over a decade. This 'not a real fan' mentality isn't helping."

2K Games will announce Borderlands 4's official price when pre-orders launch. The game releases September 12, 2025.

Would you pay $80 for the latest blockbuster game?

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently told IGN:

"Consumers are willing to pay for the very best. It's our job to deliver much more value than what we charge."
