The Sims Creator's Latest, Proxi, Unveils New Details
Will Wright, the visionary behind The Sims, unveils more about his innovative AI life simulation game, Proxi, in a recent Twitch stream. This highly anticipated title, first hinted at in 2018, is finally taking shape, with details emerging from a Gallium Studio livestream. Let's delve into what makes Proxi unique.
A Deeply Personal Gaming Experience
The stream, hosted by BreakthroughT1D – a charity dedicated to Type 1 diabetes research – provided valuable insight into Proxi's core mechanics. Wright emphasized the game's intensely personal nature, built around the player's own memories.
Players input their memories as text, which Proxi then transforms into animated 3D scenes. These scenes are customizable, allowing players to refine the visual representation of their recollections using in-game assets. Each memory, termed a "mem," enhances the game's AI and contributes to the player's "mind world"—a navigable 3D environment composed of hexagons.
This mind world expands as more mems are added, becoming populated with Proxies representing friends and family. Memories can be arranged chronologically and linked to specific Proxies, creating a dynamic and interconnected representation of personal experiences. Remarkably, these Proxies are even exportable to other game worlds, such as Minecraft and Roblox!
The goal is to create a magical connection between memories and their digital manifestation. Wright's focus on personalization stems from his belief that games about the player are inherently more engaging. He humorously stated, "No game designer has ever gone wrong by overestimating the narcissism of their players."
Proxi is now featured on Gallium Studio's website, with platform announcements forthcoming.
