Facebook Sequel to Tackle Recent Controversies

A sequel is in the works for The Social Network, the 2010 film chronicling the founding of Facebook.

Deadline reports that Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin will write and direct the follow-up, focusing on Facebook's more recent controversies.

Sorkin is expected to draw heavily from The Facebook Files, a Wall Street Journal series that published leaked documents indicating the social media giant was fully aware of the societal damage its algorithms were amplifying.

Play

Sorkin has previously said he believes Facebook played a role in the January 6, 2020, Capitol riot, though Deadline's sources clarify the sequel won't be specifically about that day. It will also explore social media's impact on younger users and communities outside the United States.

While Sorkin seems to have a clear narrative direction, the project is still in its early stages with no confirmed casting. Will Jesse Eisenberg reprise his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg? Sorkin has considered a sequel for some time, and Eisenberg has previously shown enthusiasm for the idea.

"Oh, yeah," Eisenberg told IndieWire in 2019 when asked about returning for a potential sequel. "Getting to play a complex character in a major film is incredibly rare. It was a fortunate opportunity to portray a nuanced role typically found in stage or art-house productions, but on such a large scale."
