SHIFT UP Responds to DRM Concerns

Stellar Blade is preparing for its highly anticipated launch on PC, and in light of growing player concerns, developer SHIFT UP has addressed the inclusion of Denuvo Anti-Tamper technology. In an official statement posted on Twitter (X) on May 17, the studio confirmed that the DRM has been "hard tuned" to ensure minimal impact on performance. According to SHIFT UP, the optimization results in nearly identical average frame rates, with some scenarios even showing improved minimum frame rates.

DRM, or Digital Rights Management, is widely used across the gaming industry to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of software. While effective in combating piracy, Denuvo has historically drawn criticism for potentially degrading game performance and limiting modding capabilities.

However, SHIFT UP shared internal benchmark data comparing performance with and without DRM enabled. The results showed negligible differences across key metrics, including average FPS, minimum FPS, maximum FPS, and 1% and 0.1% low frame rates. This transparency has been well-received by the community.

Moreover, the studio confirmed full mod support at launch—uncommon for titles protected by Denuvo—giving players the freedom to customize their experience without restrictions. While fans appreciate the technical clarity and openness, many still hope for a future DRM-free version to further enhance accessibility and performance trust.

Region Lock Challenges and Ongoing Efforts

Another pressing concern surrounds regional availability due to PlayStation Network (PSN) dependencies. Although Stellar Blade does not require an active PSN connection to play on PC, its authentication system is still tied to PSN-supported regions. As a result, players in over 130 countries where PSN is not available may face access limitations.

SHIFT UP acknowledged this issue, stating they are “closely discussing the region lock issue with the publisher” and are doing their “BEST to resolve most of it as soon as possible.” The studio emphasized that both the PC and PS5 versions will receive identical content updates, ensuring no player is disadvantaged—especially early adopters who purchase the game at launch.
