Trump Announces 100% Tariff on Foreign-Produced Films

United States President Donald Trump has revealed plans to impose a 100 percent tariff on films “made outside the U.S.” In a Sunday afternoon social media post, he claimed that foreign film production poses a “national security risk” to the country.

“America’s film industry is collapsing rapidly,” Trump stated. “Foreign nations are luring our filmmakers and studios with lucrative incentives, hollowing out Hollywood and other U.S. regions. This is a deliberate attack by other countries and a national security concern. It’s also a vehicle for messaging and propaganda! As a result, I’m directing the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to promptly initiate a 100% tariff on all films entering our country that are produced abroad. We want movies made in America again!”

The practical implementation of this tariff remains uncertain, as does its scope regarding affected productions. Many countries offer tax incentives that attract overseas filmmakers to locations such as the UK, Australia, and various European nations.

Filming abroad often serves to immerse audiences in captivating, exotic settings. The impact of this policy on globally set franchises like James Bond, John Wick, Extraction, or Mission: Impossible—or films like the upcoming F1, shot on international racetracks—remains unclear.

It’s uncertain how this tariff will affect films currently in production or already completed, why television productions are excluded, or how international markets might retaliate against U.S. films if penalties are imposed on foreign films seeking American audiences.
