Xbox Friends Requests Reborn After Hiatus
Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends
Xbox has finally reinstated the much-requested friend request system, ending a ten-year absence. This highly anticipated feature returns to the platform, offering gamers a more controlled and intentional social experience.
A Two-Way Street: More Control for Gamers
Xbox's announcement, shared via blog and Twitter (X), marks a significant shift from the previous "follow" system. "We're thrilled to bring back friend requests," stated Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton. "Friendships are now mutual, invite-based, providing greater control and flexibility." Users can now send, accept, or reject friend requests via the console's People tab.
The "follow" system, implemented on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, allowed users to view each other's activity without mutual consent. While fostering openness, it lacked the direct connection of friend requests. The ambiguity between friends and followers often led to confusion.
The "follow" feature remains, enabling one-way connections for following content creators or communities. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system, maintaining existing relationships.
Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. New privacy and notification settings accompany the friend request update, allowing users to manage friend requests, follower requests, and notifications directly within the Xbox settings.
Positive Reception and Anticipation
Social media erupted with positive feedback, with users expressing excitement and highlighting the shortcomings of the previous system. Some users even humorously admitted to being unaware of the friend request feature's absence.
While this update caters to social players, it doesn't diminish the appeal of solo gaming. The return of friend requests simply adds another layer of connection to the Xbox experience.
The full rollout date remains unannounced. However, given the enthusiastic response, a reversal seems unlikely. Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC are currently testing the feature, with a broader release expected later this year. Join the Xbox Insiders program to experience the update early. Download the Xbox Insider Hub on your Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC.
