Console Sales Plummet in Region Y
European Console Market Experiences Sales Dip in 2024
The European video game console market faced a significant downturn in 2024, primarily attributed to market saturation and a dearth of new major console releases. Despite the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro – a refresh of the existing PS5 – overall console sales plummeted by 21% compared to 2023. This decline impacted all major players: PlayStation sales fell 20%, Nintendo Switch sales dropped 15%, and Xbox Series X/S sales experienced a dramatic 48% decrease.
This stagnation is likely due to the age of current-generation consoles. The original PS5 and Xbox Series consoles debuted in 2020, and the Nintendo Switch launched even earlier in 2017. The market appears to be awaiting the next generation of hardware. Further evidence of this stagnation is seen in the US market, where the Meta Quest 3S outsold all major gaming consoles in 2024, suggesting a broader trend of console sales plateauing.
Digital Sales Rise Amidst Overall Slow Growth
While console sales faltered, the overall European gaming market saw a modest 1% increase in 2024, reaching 188.1 million PC and console game sales. However, this growth was largely driven by a significant shift in purchasing habits. Digital game sales surged by 15% to 131.6 million units, while physical game sales plummeted by 22% to 56.5 million units. This clearly indicates a growing preference for digital distribution.
Anticipation for 2025
The outlook for 2025 is more optimistic, with the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 expected to revitalize the market and boost sales considerably. However, it's crucial to note that the reported sales figures exclude several major European markets, including the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria. Inclusion of these markets might paint a slightly less bleak picture of 2024's performance.
