Creator of Bloodborne 60fps Patch Says Sony Has Sent Him a DMCA Takedown — but Why Now?

Feb 23,25

The creator of a popular Bloodborne 60fps patch has received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony. Lance McDonald, a well-known video game modder, announced the news on Twitter, stating he removed all online links to the patch as requested by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

McDonald highlighted a YouTube video showcasing the 2021 patch, and recounted a humorous meeting with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida where he revealed his involvement in creating the mod. Yoshida's reaction was described as laughter.

Bloodborne's status as a long-unupdated title remains a significant point of contention among fans. Despite its critical and commercial success on PS4, Sony has yet to release an official next-gen patch for 60fps performance, a remaster, or a sequel. This absence has fueled community efforts, including McDonald's mod and recent breakthroughs in PS4 emulation.

Recent advancements in PS4 emulation, specifically ShadPS4, allow for a near-remaster experience on PC with 60fps gameplay, as highlighted by Digital Foundry. This development may have prompted Sony's more assertive action. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Earlier this month, Yoshida offered his perspective on Bloodborne's lack of updates in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He speculated that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep personal attachment to the game, coupled with his busy schedule, prevents him from either updating it himself or allowing others to do so. Yoshida emphasized this is merely a personal theory and not a leak of confidential information.

Bloodborne's future remains uncertain, nearly a decade after its initial release. While Miyazaki often avoids direct questions about Bloodborne, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that the game would benefit from a release on more modern platforms.
