A recent Newzoo report highlights a contracting battle royale genre, yet Fortnite continues to dominate.

The 2025 PC & Console Gaming Report from Newzoo reveals key industry shifts, including a decline in the battle royale genre. Data shows its share of playtime dropped from 19% in 2021 to 12% in 2024.

Using its Game Performance Monitor across 37 markets (excluding China and India) on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, Newzoo notes that shooter and battle royale games together consistently claim 40% of playtime. As battle royale engagement has waned, shooter games have gained ground.

Despite this 7% decline, Fortnite’s dominance within the genre is striking. Newzoo reports its share of battle royale playtime surged from 43% in 2021 to 77% in 2024, capturing a larger slice of a shrinking market.

Role-playing games have also risen, growing from a 9% share in 2021 to 13% in 2024. Newzoo notes that 18% of RPG playtime in 2024 stemmed from major 2023 titles like Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo IV, Honkai: Star Rail, Hogwarts Legacy, and Starfield.

Newzoo emphasizes the intense competition for player attention. While Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Apex Legends endure, others falter. Shooters and RPGs are steadily gaining ground, with standout titles like Marvel Rivals and Baldur's Gate 3 driving engagement.

Fortnite’s resilience stems from its frequent updates, diverse gaming experiences, and expanding genres. As player interests evolve, industry trends will likely continue to shift in the coming years.
