Tactical Shooter Ready or Not Faces Steam Backlash Over Console-Driven Content Changes
Ready or Not, the tactical first-person shooter developed by VOID Interactive, is experiencing a wave of negative reviews on Steam due to modifications made to align with console release requirements.
In a statement shared on Steam, VOID explained that adjustments to gore, nudity, violence, and depictions of child mistreatment were necessary for the July 15 console launch. To avoid maintaining separate versions with distinct assets and mechanics, which could increase bug risks, some changes were applied to the PC version as well.
"Throughout the console porting process, we’ve made changes only when absolutely required by our first-party partners, ensuring they align with the game’s original tone to avoid causing concern," the development team stated.
"The console version carries an ESRB M-rating, PEGI 18, and USK 18. However, console platforms impose additional content requirements, some of which will be noticeable in the PC version."
The studio noted that simple changes, like swapping textures, allowed them to preserve the original intent for PC, but more complex alterations, such as modifying entire character models to add clothing, were less practical to isolate.
Specific changes include preventing players from dismembering enemies after death, though limb damage during combat remains. Torture and nudity have been toned down, and an animation of a child, previously shown as convulsing violently, now depicts them as unconscious or sleeping.
"These changes for the console version are minor enough that most players wouldn’t notice without us pointing them out, but we value transparency," VOID stated. "The adjustments primarily involve evidence and nudity, with texture changes not impacting the PC version."
Despite this, some PC players are expressing strong dissatisfaction with VOID’s approach.
"Avoid purchasing this game. Don’t support VOID Interactive. It wasn’t flawless before, but now they’re censoring it for profit, bowing to console market demands," one user wrote.
"DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!" another user declared. "There’s no excuse for censoring any content. This is lazy—failing to separate PC and console versions. I didn’t pay for an 18+ game to have it censored!"

While Ready or Not maintains a 'very positive' overall Steam rating, recent reviews have shifted to 'mixed' due to the influx of negative feedback. VOID has not yet publicly addressed the criticism. IGN has reached out for comment.
In 2022, Ready or Not was temporarily removed from Steam following a takedown request over a trademark issue tied to a level depicting a mass shooting at a nightclub named Prysm, released on the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting.
VOID Interactive also ended its partnership with publisher Team17 shortly after announcing a level involving a school shooting.
