SEGA Explores 'Persona 5: The Phantom X' Global Launch

Dec 11,24

SEGA's latest financial report hints at a potential global launch for Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X). The report indicates that the gacha spin-off, currently performing as expected in its initial release, is under consideration for expansion into both Japan and global markets.

P5X: A Global Release on the Horizon?

Currently in open beta, P5X initially launched in China on April 12th, 2024, followed by Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and Taiwan on April 18th. Developed by Black Wings Game Studio and published by Perfect World Games, the game casts players as "Wonder," a high school student by day and Persona-wielding Phantom Thief by night. Wonder, alongside the original Joker and a new character, YUI, combats societal injustices using a turn-based combat system familiar to Persona fans. The game incorporates a gacha system for character acquisition.

The game features Janosik, a new Persona inspired by Slovakian folklore, reflecting a "Robin Hood" archetype. The core gameplay retains the dungeon crawling and social sim elements of the main Persona series, adding a new roguelike game mode, "Heart Rail." This mode, similar to Honkai Star Rail's Simulated Universe, offers power-up choices, varied maps, and rewarding challenges. A gameplay showcase by content creator Faz highlights this new feature.

SEGA's Strong Performance and Future Plans

SEGA reported robust sales for its "Full Game" category, citing strong performance from titles like Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Football Manager 2024. The company also announced structural changes, creating a new "Gaming Business" segment encompassing online gaming, slot machine development, and integrated resort operations. SEGA projects increased sales and profits for FY2025, with the Full Game segment anticipated to generate 93 billion Yen (approximately 597 billion USD). A new Sonic title is also slated for release next year. The potential global release of P5X further strengthens SEGA's position in the gaming market.
