Arrowhead Boss: Helldivers 2 Our Main Focus for a Long Time
Arrowhead Game Studios, the developers behind the hit game Helldivers 2, have addressed concerns from the community about potentially shifting focus away from their current success to a new project, internally referred to as "Game 6." As reported by VG247, CEO Shams Jorjani took to the official Helldivers Discord to reassure fans amidst the excitement of the full-scale Illuminate invasion launch.
Jorjani expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from players, stating, "The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead's future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn't have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you." This comment, while intended to be positive, led some fans to worry that Arrowhead might already be diverting resources away from Helldivers 2.
Quick to alleviate these fears, Jorjani clarified, "Nah. It's ALL Helldivers 2 for now. A very, very small team will spin up something later this year and go at it sloowly. Helldivers is our main focus and will be for a loooong time." He further emphasized the longevity of Helldivers 2 by stating that content updates would continue "as long as you folks keep playing and buying Super Credits," referring to the game's virtual currency used to purchase Premium Warbonds.
Jorjani also addressed a fan's concern about region-locking issues that plagued Helldivers 2, reassuring them that the next game, fully funded by Arrowhead itself, would not face similar restrictions. This suggests that "Game 6" will not be Helldivers 3 and that Arrowhead plans to maintain full creative control.
Reflecting on the development process, Jorjani admitted that Helldivers 2 had a challenging eight-year journey but ultimately succeeded. He outlined a more streamlined approach for "Game 6," focusing on perfecting core elements early on: "For the most part of the development cycle games plain suck... For our next game we're doing things in a much smarter way and nailing a lot of the core s\*\*t early on (as you should) then make the rest."
These comments align with previous statements from Arrowhead's developers, who have expressed their desire for Helldivers 2 to be a long-term success. The game has already achieved record-breaking sales, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. Despite various challenges post-launch, including changes to PSN account requirements and community feedback on game balance, Arrowhead remains committed.
Alex Bolle, production director on Helldivers 2, reiterated this commitment to IGN, emphasizing the team's motivation to keep the game evolving: "How do we stay true to the Helldivers 2 fantasy, challenging enough that we keep making amazing new features and new systems and all that while we stay true to who we are? And I think it's something that is so motivating for the years to come."
Recent leaks hint at exciting new content, including the potential addition of Super Earth as a playable map, indicating that Arrowhead is far from finished with Helldivers 2. As the game continues to thrive, fans can look forward to years of engaging updates and new features.
