Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Tackles Historical Diversity

Warhorse Studios developers are growing weary of the criticism surrounding Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Discover their perspective on the controversy and how it impacts the game's development.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Diversity Stems from Historical Precision
Warhorse Studios Aims to Deliver an Engaging Gaming Experience

Warhorse Studios developers expressed frustration regarding the online criticism directed at Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2), emphasizing their primary goal of creating an exceptional video game. In a February 3, 2025 interview with PC Gamer, PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling addressed the controversy surrounding the game's enhanced diversity.
Stolz-Zwilling stated, "Several years ago, we were labeled differently. Now we're facing new categorizations. It appears someone always wants to define us, when we're simply focused on developing a compelling game." This statement followed critiques from fans and reviewers regarding the inclusion of LGBTQ+ content and other elements deemed "woke."
Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner echoed this sentiment, asserting that the development team shouldn't be blamed for the current situation. "We believe extreme voices will never be satisfied," he commented.
Exploring Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Diverse Setting

KCD2's setting in Kuttenberg provides a more diverse environment compared to its predecessor. Bittner explained, "Kuttenberg features greater ethnic diversity because it served as the royal mint." As Bohemia's second most important city and financial hub, Kuttenberg attracted people from various global regions, creating a multicultural center unlike other locations in the series.
Bittner highlighted several culturally diverse elements integrated into the game, including Italian merchants, German-speaking residents, a Jewish quarter, and more. He emphasized, "It's crucial to represent not just these communities, but their worldviews - an aspect often missing in games and media claiming to promote diversity."
Stolz-Zwilling clarified that neither publisher Plaion nor Embracer mandated specific agendas for the game, noting that only community feedback influenced KCD2's approach. "Every element has been thoroughly researched and verified multiple times," he assured.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Pre-Orders Remain Stable Despite Controversy
Warhorse Studios addressed rumors about players seeking refunds due to recent criticism. KCD2 Writer Daniel Vávra confirmed through a Twitter (X) post that the game's sales-return ratio remained unchanged despite the controversy. He noted that KCD2's position on Steam charts had temporarily declined due to nine popular games receiving discounts, which similarly affected Monster Hunter: Wilds pre-orders.
In January 2025, Vávra faced criticism regarding KCD2's queer representation, sparking rumors about the game being banned in Saudi Arabia due to unskippable LGBT+ scenes. He denied these allegations, stating "As a ROLE PLAYING GAME, players determine their own choices and face consequences aligned with the period's moral and social standards."
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is currently available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Visit our Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 page for additional game details.
