Funcom probes Dune: Awakening ornithopter PvP imbalance

Sep 25,25

Dune: Awakening developer Funcom announced an upcoming fix for players frustrated by helicopter ("Ornithopter") deaths in PvP.

As demonstrated by Reddit user Bombe18 in the video below, Ornithopters currently present an unavoidable death loop - players immediately get crushed again upon reviving. This frustrating mechanic provides no counterplay unless players carry missile launchers.

Dune developers, I accept PvP defeats. But being crushed by invincible Ornis? That's unacceptable.

"Dune developers, I accept PvP defeats," Bombe18 wrote. "But being crushed by Ornithopters that take no damage? That's unacceptable." The post suggested two potential fixes: either make Ornis take collision damage or disable their crushing capability entirely.

Funcom responded swiftly to these widespread complaints. "Sorry about this," said Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos. "We're prioritizing fixes for this 'goomba stomping' mechanic."

The issue extends beyond Ornithopters - currently all vehicles remain undamaged during collisions. Players worry that unless Funcom addresses all vehicles simultaneously, PvP metas will simply shift to other unstoppable vehicles.

Despite this PvP balancing issue, Dune: Awakening has launched successfully, earning 'Very Positive' Steam reviews. Within hours of its June 10 release, Funcom's survival MMO attracted over 142,000 concurrent players on Steam, with peak numbers expected to grow this weekend.
