Overwatch 2 revamps loot, perks, third-person mode

Overwatch 2 is evolving dramatically as we approach 2025. Beyond expected content updates, the game's core mechanics will undergo revolutionary changes - most notably through the introduction of hero perks.
Transformational Gameplay Updates Arriving in Season 15
Nearly nine years since Overwatch's 2016 debut and two-and-a-half since Overwatch 2 launched, Season 15 (beginning February 18) will fundamentally change gameplay through the new perk system. Game director Aaron Keller and Blizzard's team outlined numerous upcoming changes at a recent event, highlighting their strategy to reinvigorate player interest amidst competition from titles like Marvel Rivals.
Hero Perks System Explained
Every hero will now feature two perk types - minor and major - unlocked at specific match levels. Minor perks (unlocked at level 2) enhance base abilities, while major perks can radically alter hero mechanics mid-match, forcing players to make strategic choices between mutually exclusive upgrades.
Lead designer Alec Dawson describes these as "gameplay-shifting" modifications, similar to talent systems in Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm. For example, Orisa players might choose between maintaining Javelin Spin or replacing it with a deployable Barrier.
Stadium Mode: A Radical New Competitive Experience
Season 16 (scheduled for April) introduces Stadium mode - described by Keller as Overwatch's most significant gameplay innovation since launch. This 5v5 best-of-seven format features:
- Round-based competitive matches
- Currency system for between-round upgrades
- Optional third-person perspective
- 14-hero launch roster (with planned expansions)
While perks won't appear in Stadium initially, the mode's modification system enables similar dramatic gameplay shifts, like allowing Reaper to fly during Wraith Form.
Blizzard Revives Classic Overwatch Experiences
The development team is bringing back several nostalgic gameplay variants:
- 6v6 Competitive Open Queue (with 2-tank limit)
- Overwatch Classic featuring the infamous GOATS meta (3 tanks/3 supports)
- Return of seasonal events including April Fools' and Summer Games
New Hero Reveals: Freja and Aqua
Season 16 introduces Freja, a Danish bounty hunter specializing in explosive bolts and movement-impeding bolas. Concept art also previewed Aqua, a water-manipulating hero arriving later in 2025.
Major Systems Updates
Blizzard announced several structural changes:
- Loot Box Return: Now exclusively earnable through gameplay with full transparency about contents
- Competitive Enhancements: Season 15 rank reset with new rewards, upcoming hero bans and map voting
- Cosmetic Expansions: New Mythic skins including Zenyatta's Pixiu-inspired design and multiple weapon skins
- Esports Growth: Expanded Chinese competitive scene and new tournament systems
Additional confirmed updates include: - Second LE SSERAFIM collaboration (March 2025) - New Dokiwatch Mythic skin for Juno - Mercy and Reaper Mythic weapon skins - Upcoming D.Va Mythic skin
These sweeping changes represent Blizzard's most ambitious Overwatch 2 overhaul yet, aiming to redefine the hero shooter experience while respecting its competitive legacy.
