SAG-AFTRA Strikes Over AI Protections Against Major Video Game Companies
SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Giants: A Fight for AI Protections
SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, has initiated a strike against major video game companies, including Activision and Electronic Arts, effective July 26th. This action, following protracted negotiations, centers on concerns about the unchecked use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the need for fair compensation.
The core issue is the potential for AI to replace human performers, replicating voices and likenesses without consent. The union isn't against AI itself, but fears its misuse to undermine actors' livelihoods and ethical considerations surrounding AI-generated content that may not align with an actor's values. Smaller roles, often crucial stepping stones for aspiring actors, are also at risk.
To address the challenges, SAG-AFTRA has created new agreements. The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA) offers a flexible framework for indie and lower-budget games, with four tiers based on budget size (from $250,000 to $30 million), providing tailored rates and terms. Crucially, this agreement includes AI protections previously rejected by the industry. A January side deal with Replica Studios allows actors to license digital voice replicas under controlled terms, including the right to opt out of perpetual use.
Further temporary solutions are provided by the Interim Interactive Media Agreement and the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement. These agreements cover various aspects including compensation, AI usage guidelines, rest periods, and payment terms, but exclude expansions and DLC released after the initial game launch. Projects adhering to these agreements are exempt from the strike.
Negotiations, beginning in October 2022, culminated in a 98.32% strike authorization vote by SAG-AFTRA members in September 2023. While progress was made on several fronts, the lack of robust AI protections remains the primary stumbling block. Union leadership emphasizes the industry's substantial profits and the vital contributions of its members. They are resolute in their demand for fair treatment and protection against AI exploitation in the ever-evolving video game landscape. The strike highlights the union's commitment to ensuring its members aren't left behind in the age of AI.
