A Cancelled Iron Man Game from 2003 Surfaces
Development Followed X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge
Edwards shared never-before-seen images and gameplay footage of the unreleased title, originally slated for a 2003 release. The game, tentatively titled "The Invincible Iron Man," aimed to evoke the character's original comic book persona. Edwards' involvement followed the successful launch of Genepool Software's X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge.
His Twitter (X) posts included the game's title screen, the Genepool Software logo, gameplay screenshots, and Xbox gameplay footage showcasing the startup screen and a desert-set tutorial segment.
Activision's Decision to Cancel "The Invincible Iron Man"
Despite enthusiastic fan response, Activision shelved "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development commenced. The subsequent closure of Genepool Software left Edwards and his team unemployed.
While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards offered several possible explanations based on fan comments: delays in the Iron Man film's release, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or the possibility of another developer taking over the project.
Another point of discussion was Tony Stark's design, noticeably different from later MCU portrayals. The game's design predates Robert Downey Jr.'s iconic role by almost five years, closely resembling the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version from the early 2000s. Edwards confirmed the design choice was the decision of the game's artist. He also teased further gameplay footage, though it remains unreleased at the time of this writing.
