Like a Dragon: Yakuza Actors Have Never Played the Game
Like a Dragon: Yakuza Adaptation – A Fresh Perspective, or a Risky Gamble?
The lead actors of the upcoming Like a Dragon: Yakuza adaptation made a surprising revelation at San Diego Comic-Con: neither Ryoma Takeuchi nor Kento Kaku had played any of the games before or during filming. This deliberate choice, according to the production team, aimed to foster a fresh interpretation of the beloved characters.
Takeuchi explained, via translator, that while aware of the games' global popularity, he was intentionally prevented from playing them to ensure a unique approach to the character's portrayal. Kaku corroborated this, stating their intention was to create their own version, embodying the characters' essence while maintaining respect for the source material.
This decision, however, has ignited a firestorm of debate amongst fans. Concerns over deviations from the source material are widespread, with some questioning whether the show will capture the spirit of the games. The recent confirmation that the iconic karaoke minigame will be absent only fueled these anxieties.
While some remain optimistic, others point to the success of other adaptations, such as Prime Video's Fallout, where lead actress Ella Purnell's immersion in the game world contributed to its 65 million viewer milestone in just two weeks. Purnell highlighted the importance of understanding the source material, while acknowledging the ultimate creative authority rests with the show's creators.
RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama, however, expressed confidence in directors Masaharu Take and Kengo Takimoto's vision. He described Director Take's understanding of the story as that of an original author, highlighting the potential for a unique and engaging adaptation. Yokoyama emphasized the desire for a fresh interpretation, rather than a mere imitation, particularly given the already-perfected portrayal of Kiryu in the games. He welcomed this opportunity for a novel approach to the iconic character.
