Ghost of Yotei Set in Hokkaido For Its Sense of Danger and Beauty

Sucker Punch, the creators behind Ghost of Yōtei, explain why Hokkaido serves as the game's primary backdrop. Discover how they meticulously recreated Hokkaido's landscapes and the insights gained from their research trips to Japan.

Why Ghost of Yōtei Chose Hokkaido as Its Central Location

Blending Authenticity With Fiction in Real-World Settings

Ghost of Yōtei continues Sucker Punch's tradition of bringing real Japanese locales into gaming, with Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) taking center stage. In a PlayStation Blog update on May 15, Game Director Nate Fox detailed why Hokkaido became the perfect stage for protagonist Atsu's epic journey.

Reimagining actual locations comes naturally to Sucker Punch, having previously brought Tsushima Island to life in their inaugural Ghost title. Their expertise earned acclaim from Japanese media, prompting Tsushima's mayor to name Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell cultural ambassadors for their authentic portrayal.

Tsushima Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu reflected in 2021: "Many Japanese citizens aren't familiar with Gen-ko period history, let alone international audiences. Their stunning visual storytelling introduced Tsushima to the world."

The developers maintain this respectful approach for Ghost of Yōtei, aiming to "preserve authenticity within fictional narratives." Hokkaido's selection stemmed from its breathtaking landscapes and historical significance as Japan's 1603 frontier. "For a ghost story, you need dramatic scenery," Fox emphasized.

Harmonizing Majesty and Peril

Fox recounts two formative research trips to Japan, particularly highlighting Shiretoko National Park's juxtaposition of natural splendor and inherent risks.

"The coexistence of tranquil beauty and environmental hazards created our ideal atmosphere," Fox explained. "That duality confirmed Hokkaido was perfect for our vision."

Mt. Yōtei ("Machineshir" to the indigenous Ainu people) emerged as a symbolic centerpiece, representing both Hokkaido's spirit and Atsu's personal tragedy.

Immersing themselves in local culture proved invaluable for capturing Hokkaido's essence. While acknowledging cultural knowledge gaps, Fox shared upcoming initiatives to address this. As Sucker Punch's most ambitious project to date, Ghost of Yōtei arrives exclusively on PS5 October 2, 2025.
