Sucker Punch Unveils Ghost of Yotei as Its Most Expansive Title Yet

Ghost of Yotei promises unparalleled freedom and vast open-world maps, marking Sucker Punch's most ambitious project. Discover more about the game’s features and its portrayal of Japanese culture.
New Insights into Ghost of Yotei
Open-Ended Pursuit of the Yotei Six

In an April 24 interview with Famitsu, Sucker Punch developers revealed fresh details about the standalone sequel to the Ghost series. Building on the success of the PlayStation exclusive Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei introduces deeper gameplay mechanics and a richer narrative.
Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized the game’s expansive maps and flexible gameplay, noting that players can independently locate and confront the Yotei Six to seek vengeance, rather than following a linear path.
Recently, Sucker Punch announced the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei and debuted a trailer, “The Onryō’s List,” offering glimpses of the story and gameplay. The trailer introduced protagonist Atsu and her quest to avenge her family against the Yotei Six.
Expanded Weapon Arsenal

Beyond open-world exploration, the game offers greater weapon variety. The latest trailer sparked fan speculation about new weapons for Atsu, which Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed in the interview. Players can wield a samurai sword, odachi, chain sickle, dual swords, and spear.
Fox clarified that the samurai sword remains central, with other weapons learned from masters encountered in the story and open world.

He added that Atsu, unbound by samurai honor, employs a versatile fighting style. She can pick up and throw dropped enemy weapons, though this feature is limited to specific weapons. Fox noted, “If you can wield it, you can use it strategically.”
Ezo as a Vibrant Backdrop

Set in 1603 near Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), the game features a lawless yet breathtaking environment, blending natural beauty with hidden dangers, according to Cornell.
The game showcases Ainu culture, an indigenous group from northern Japan. The developers researched extensively in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting experts to authentically represent Ainu traditions. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido’s stunning landscapes, aiming to share its beauty globally.

Ghost of Tsushima earned acclaim from Japanese critics for its accurate depiction of Japanese history and culture. Sucker Punch aims to maintain this standard in Ghost of Yotei, highlighting the perilous wilderness of Ezo.
Ghost of Yotei will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. For the latest updates, explore our related article below!
