"Hyper Light Breaker: Mastering Lock-On Targeting"
Quick Links
Hyper Light Breaker is shrouded in mystery, with many mechanics left for players to discover, enhancing the game's allure. One crucial feature is the lock-on system, which serves as the game's primary targeting mechanic. While locking onto an enemy can help you focus, it's not always the best approach. The lock-on system in Hyper Light Breaker is most effective in specific one-on-one scenarios. This guide will walk you through how to target enemies and provide insights on when to lock on versus when to opt for the default free camera mode in this Synthwave roguelite.
How To Target Enemies In Hyper Light Breaker
To target a specific enemy in Hyper Light Breaker, center your view on the target and press in the right analog stick (R3) on your controller. The game will automatically identify the correct target, even within a large group of enemies. Your view will zoom in slightly, and a reticle will appear around your target.
You don't need a direct line of sight to lock onto an enemy; as long as they are visible on-screen and within range, you can lock on. Once locked on, your character's movement will adapt to keep the camera focused on the target, causing your movements to circle around them. Fast-moving enemies can shift the camera perspective rapidly, potentially altering your character's direction mid-movement.
To switch targets while locked on, simply move the right analog stick left or right. The targeting reticle will jump to the nearest enemy within range. To cancel the lock-on and revert to the default third-person camera mode, press the right analog stick again. This control can be customized in the game's settings menu. Additionally, if you move too far from your target, the lock-on will automatically disengage.
When Should I Lock On vs Use Free Cam?
Locking on can be advantageous in certain situations but can also be limiting and risky in others. It's best to use lock-on during one-on-one fights, such as against bosses or strong enemies with yellow health bars, but only after clearing out other nearby enemies.
The lock-on feature focuses your camera solely on one target, making it harder to manage multiple enemies and leaving you vulnerable to attacks from your blind spots. For most of the game, especially when dealing with multiple or weaker enemies, the free camera mode is more beneficial as it allows you to see and react to your surroundings more effectively.
When facing a mini-boss or boss, and after you've eliminated all minor threats, locking on can help keep the target centered on your screen. If additional enemies appear, disengage the lock-on to regain full situational awareness, then re-lock on the boss once you've cleared the area.
For instance, during an Extraction sequence, you'll encounter several waves of regular enemies followed by a mini-boss. The mini-boss might spawn while other enemies are still active. In such cases, it's advisable to use the free camera mode until all waves of regular enemies are cleared, then lock onto the mini-boss to focus your efforts without distractions.
