Hopes to Highlight Kunitsu-Gami's Cultural Appeal Through Traditional Arts

Capcom is commemorating the launch of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess on July 19, an action strategy game steeped in Japanese folklore, with a special performance by the National Bunraku Theater. Based in Osaka and celebrating its 40th anniversary, the theater has crafted a unique show titled "Ceremony of the Deity: The Maiden's Destiny," featuring puppets representing the game's protagonists, Soh and the Maiden.

Bunraku, a traditional Japanese puppet theater, uses large puppets accompanied by the three-stringed samisen to narrate stories. The performance not only pays homage to Kunitsu-Gami but also showcases the artistry of Bunraku, brought to life by Master Puppeteer Kanjuro Kiritake.

"Bunraku is deeply rooted in Osaka, much like Capcom itself," said Miritake, a key figure in the collaboration. "We feel a profound connection in taking this art form beyond Osaka to the world."

This Bunraku performance serves as a prequel to the events in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. Capcom describes it as a "new form of Bunraku," blending traditional elements with modern technology, including CG backdrops that mirror the game's world.

In a statement on July 18, Capcom expressed its aim to bring the enchanting world of Bunraku to global audiences, using the game's launch as a platform to showcase Japanese cultural elements through traditional arts.

Producer Tairoku Nozoe shared in an Xbox interview that the game's concept was influenced by game director Shuichi Kawata's passion for Bunraku. The development team was inspired by the movements and direction of "Ningyo Joruri Bunraku," integrating these elements into Kunitsu-Gami even before considering a collaboration with the National Bunraku Theater.

"Kawata's enthusiasm for Bunraku led us to witness a performance together, which deeply moved us," Nozoe explained. "It reinforced our desire to incorporate such a timeless art form into our game and connect with the National Bunraku Theatre."

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess unfolds on Mt. Kafuku, a once-sacred mountain now tainted by a dark "defilement." Players must purify villages during the day and defend the revered Maiden at night, utilizing the land's sacred masks to restore peace.

The game is set to launch on July 19 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, and will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at no extra cost. Additionally, a free demo of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is available across all platforms.
