Microsoft to End Skype, Launch Free Teams Version in May

May 07,25

Microsoft has officially announced that it will be shutting down Skype in May, opting instead to introduce a free version of Microsoft Teams to replace it. This decision comes amidst a landscape where communication giants like WhatsApp, Zoom, FaceTime, and Messenger lead the charge in voice over IP (VoIP) services, pushing traditional cellphone calls facilitated by platforms like Skype into obsolescence.

According to a report by The Verge, existing Skype users will seamlessly transition to Microsoft Teams. Upon logging into the Teams app, users will find all their Skype content, including message history and contacts, readily available without needing to create a new account. However, Microsoft will begin phasing out the support for domestic and international calls.

For those who wish to preserve their Skype data, Microsoft offers a tool that allows users to export their photos and conversation history. This is particularly useful for those who do not plan to migrate to Teams and want to keep their Skype chat history accessible.

Skype users have a 60-day window to make their decision, as the platform will go offline starting May 5. Microsoft assures that it will honor existing Skype credits, but new customers will no longer have access to the paid Skype features that enable international and domestic calls.

The most significant casualty of the Skype shutdown is the loss of the ability to make calls to cellphones. In a conversation with The Verge, Microsoft's Vice President of Product, Amit Fulay, explained that while the telephony feature was once a valuable asset during Skype's heyday, its relevance has diminished. "Part of the reason is we look at the usage and the trends, and this functionality was great at the time when voice over IP (VoIP) wasn’t available and mobile data plans were very expensive," Fulay stated. "If we look at the future, that’s not a thing we want to be in."

Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing real-time video and voice communications and tapping into Skype's 160-plus million active users for new market opportunities. At its peak, Skype was integrated across all Windows devices and was even highlighted as a key feature for Xbox consoles. However, Microsoft acknowledges that Skype's user base has remained stagnant in recent years, prompting a shift in focus towards Microsoft Teams for consumer use.
