Ubisoft's €1.16B Tencent Deal Spawns New IP Subsidiary
Ubisoft has established a new subsidiary centered around its major franchises—Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six—following a €1.16 billion (approximately $1.25 billion) investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent.
This announcement arrives shortly after the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows, which recently surpassed 3 million players. Ubisoft previously faced a series of notable setbacks, staff reductions, studio shutdowns, and canceled projects leading up to the launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows. The company's stock price hitting a historic low has placed intense pressure on its latest title to deliver strong results.
The new France-based entity, valued at €4 billion (around $4.3 billion), will prioritize "developing game ecosystems that are evergreen and accessible across multiple platforms." Tencent will hold a 25% stake in the subsidiary.
Ubisoft elaborated: "With enhanced resources and expanded creative capabilities, the subsidiary will elevate the quality of narrative-driven single-player games, expand multiplayer content with more frequent updates, introduce free-to-play elements, and incorporate deeper social features."
Ubisoft also stated it will “concentrate efforts” on growing its Ghost Recon and The Division series, as well as expanding its top-performing live titles.
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ubisoft,” declared Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of the company.
“This strategic move is fundamental to our transformation, creating an operational model that enables both agility and ambition. We are dedicated to crafting resilient game ecosystems that remain relevant over time, elevating successful brands, and pioneering new intellectual properties through cutting-edge technologies.
“By forming a specialized subsidiary to lead development for three of our most prominent franchises, and welcoming Tencent as a minority investor, we are unlocking the value of our assets, reinforcing our financial stability, and establishing optimal conditions for sustained growth. With its dedicated and autonomous leadership, the subsidiary will evolve these brands into distinctive, interconnected experiences.
“Our commitment is to build a more agile and focused organization—one where skilled teams elevate our brands, accelerate the rise of emerging franchises, and drive innovation in next-generation technologies. Our goal is to deliver captivating, memorable games that exceed player expectations and generate lasting value for shareholders and stakeholders alike.”
What does this agreement mean in practice? The subsidiary will encompass teams working on Rainbow Six, Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry across studios in Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia. It also includes Ubisoft’s existing game catalog and all projects currently in development or planned for the future. This suggests ongoing projects remain secure, and there is currently no indication of further workforce reductions.
The transaction is anticipated to close by the end of 2025.
