"Wheel of Time RPG Confirmed as Open-World, No Release Date Yet"

The recent announcement of a video game adaptation of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series has stirred both excitement and skepticism among fans. According to a report by Variety, a "AAA open-world role-playing game" for PC and consoles is currently in development, with a projected three-year timeline. This project is being spearheaded by iwot Studios' new Montreal-based game developer, under the leadership of former Warner Bros. Games executive Craig Alexander. Alexander's track record includes overseeing major titles like The Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and Asheron's Call, which typically would generate high anticipation.

However, the involvement of iwot Studios, which acquired the rights to The Wheel of Time as Red Eagle Entertainment back in 2004, has raised doubts. Online searches reveal a strained relationship with the franchise's dedicated fanbase, with some labeling iwot as an "IP camper" and others accusing the company of mismanaging the IP over the years. A particularly vocal criticism can be traced back to a 10-year-old Reddit post, highlighting fans' frustrations with unfulfilled projects.

The skepticism is further fueled by the ambitious claim that a newly established studio could deliver a triple-A RPG that meets the high expectations of The Wheel of Time enthusiasts within a mere three years. This has led to a cautious "we'll believe it when we see it" sentiment spreading across online communities.

Despite these concerns, The Wheel of Time has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to the success of its Amazon Prime Video series. After facing backlash for deviating from the source material in Seasons 1 and 2, the show managed to regain favor with a well-received Season 3. As Season 4 remains unannounced, the series continues to attract new fans, potentially broadening the audience for the upcoming game.

To gain a deeper understanding of the project, I conducted a video call with Rick Selvage, the head of iwot Studios, and Craig Alexander, who leads the studio's video game development efforts. Our discussion aimed to clarify the project's current status, its scope, and what fans can anticipate, as well as to address the online criticism head-on.
