The 2025 State of the Game Industry Report

80 Percent of Game Devs Are Making Games for PC

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) unveiled a striking trend in their 2025 State of the Game Industry report on January 21, 2025: a staggering 80% of game developers are now focusing on PC game development. This annual survey, which captures the pulse of the global gaming community, highlights the evolving landscape, challenges, and opportunities within the industry.

The report indicates a significant 14% increase from the previous year, where 66% of developers targeted PC. GDC suggests that this shift might be influenced by the burgeoning popularity of Valve's Steam Deck. Although not explicitly listed as an option in the survey, a notable 44% of developers selecting the 'Other' category mentioned Steam Deck as a platform of interest.

Last year's findings already positioned PC as the "dominant platform," despite the emergence of user-generated content (UGC) platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, and the anticipated Nintendo Switch successor, now known as Switch 2. The trend of PC's dominance has been steadily climbing, rising from 56% in 2020 to 66% in 2024.

If this trajectory persists, we can anticipate an even richer library of PC games. However, the forthcoming release of the graphically and performance-enhanced Switch 2 could potentially alter this trend.

One-Third of Triple A Devs Works On Live Service Games

The same report sheds light on another significant trend: one-third (33%) of AAA developers are currently engaged in developing live-service games. Expanding the scope to all respondents, 16% are actively working on such titles, while 13% express interest in future development. Conversely, 41% of respondents show no interest in pursuing this model, citing concerns like declining player interest, creative stagnation, and the risks associated with microtransactions and burnout.

Those who are working on or interested in live-service games recognize the potential for financial growth and community engagement. However, GDC points out a critical challenge: "market oversaturation," as developers struggle to sustain a viable player base. A notable example of this is Ubisoft's decision to shut down XDefiant just six months post-launch.

Some Devs Underrepresented in GDC’s State of the Game Industry

On January 23, 2025, PC Gamer highlighted a notable gap in the GDC's latest report: a significant underrepresentation of game developers from regions outside the Western world. Nearly 70% of the respondents hailed from countries such as the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Notably absent were developers from China, a powerhouse in mobile gaming, and Japan.

This skewed demographic could potentially bias the report towards Western perspectives, possibly not fully capturing the global dynamics of the game industry. Understanding these nuances is crucial for a comprehensive view of the gaming landscape.
