Sony Turned Down The Order: 1886 Sequel Due to Critical Reception, Dev Says

Ready at Dawn's co-founder, Andrea Pessino, recently revealed that Sony rejected a sequel to their PlayStation 4 title, The Order: 1886, citing the original game's lukewarm critical reception. Despite this, Pessino claims Ready at Dawn pitched a compelling sequel, even expressing a willingness to accept unfavorable terms to create it.

Speaking with MinnMax, Pessino described the proposed sequel as "incredible," stating they would have "signed [their] life away" to deliver it to fans. The Order: 1886, released in 2015, boasted stunning visuals but received mixed reviews, criticized for its limited gameplay despite its impressive graphics.

Pessino acknowledged the challenging relationship with Sony during the original game's development. Meeting Sony's high graphical expectations, set by early demos, proved difficult, leading to budget constraints and a rushed release. While acknowledging this is common practice for third-party developers, the resulting tension impacted their ability to negotiate favorable terms for a sequel.

Despite this strained relationship, Pessino confirmed they pitched a sequel regardless. He explained that they were prepared to accept a "terrible budget" and limited creative control, prioritizing delivering a sequel to redeem the franchise and build upon its strong foundation. The original game concluded on a significant cliffhanger, fueling fan demand for a continuation.

Unfortunately, those hopes were ultimately dashed. Ready at Dawn, the studio behind The Order: 1886, was shut down by parent company Meta in 2024, effectively ending any chance of a sequel. IGN's review of the original game, scoring it a 6/10, highlighted its stylish presentation but criticized its restrictive gameplay. Ten years later, the unfinished story remains a lingering disappointment for fans.
