Bloodborne PSX Demake Hit by Copyright Claim: 60fps Mod Creator Offers Theory

Mar 13,25

The Bloodborne PSX demake, a recent fan project, has become the latest victim of copyright claims, following last week's takedown of the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Lance McDonald, the well-known creator of the 60fps mod, announced receiving a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment, four years after the mod's release, demanding the removal of online links. Now, Lilith Walther, creator of Nightmare Kart (formerly Bloodborne Kart) and the Bloodborne PSX demake, reports a YouTube video showcasing the demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement. McDonald confirmed MarkScan's association with Sony, noting they also issued the DMCA for his 60fps patch. He expressed bewilderment at Sony's actions, stating, "And now they’ve DMCAed an old video about the Bloodborne PSX demake project. That’s pretty wild. What the hell are they doing??"

Bloodborne's continued absence from the next-gen market is a significant point of contention among fans. Despite its critical and commercial success on PS4, Sony has yet to release an official next-gen patch, remaster, or sequel. Recent advancements in PS4 emulation, highlighted by Digital Foundry's coverage of ShadPS4 enabling full 60fps gameplay, have fueled speculation about Sony's aggressive response. While Sony hasn't commented, McDonald posited a theory that Sony's actions aim to clear the way for an official 60fps remake, preventing conflicts with fan projects in search results.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered his perspective, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep attachment to Bloodborne and his desire for complete creative control might be preventing any official updates or remasters. Yoshida emphasized this was merely a personal theory, not an official statement.

Despite Miyazaki's past statements deflecting questions about Bloodborne due to FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he acknowledged in February 2023 that a release on modern hardware would benefit the game. The situation leaves Bloodborne dormant nearly a decade after its release, leaving fans hopeful but uncertain about the future.
