Chess Enters the Esports Arena Chess Makes Historic Esports Debut at EWC 2025

The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament has a surprising new addition: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, a move that promises to bring the centuries-old strategy game to a wider audience.

Chess Officially Crowned an Esport

A groundbreaking partnership between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) will bring competitive chess to the world's largest gaming and esports festival. This collaboration aims to introduce the classic game to a new generation of players and fans.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement about its inclusion in the EWC. He highlighted chess's global appeal and vibrant competitive scene as a perfect fit for the event's mission to unite diverse gaming communities.

World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader audience. Carlsen expressed his enthusiasm, stating that this partnership presents a unique opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future players.

Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown

Chess Takes Center Stage

The EWC 2025, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, will feature a $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must compete in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will battle for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC, marking chess's inaugural esports appearance.

The CCT will feature a new, faster-paced format for broader appeal. Matches will use a 10-minute time control with no increment, and tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.

With roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, chess has captivated generations worldwide. Its digital adaptation, facilitated by platforms like Chess.com, has significantly broadened its reach, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been boosted by streaming platforms, influencers, and popular culture, such as the Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit."

Now, with its official recognition as an esport, chess is poised for even greater growth and excitement.
