Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive into Gunpla Customization and Action

Gundam Breaker 4, finally released on Steam, Switch, PS4, and PS5, marks a significant milestone for the series in the West. No longer requiring import, this global release boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options, a far cry from its predecessors. Having logged 60 hours across various platforms, I'm captivated by its depth, though some minor issues persist.

The narrative, while serviceable, isn't the game's primary focus. Early dialogue feels protracted, but later reveals and interactions elevate the experience. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though appreciating the significance of certain characters requires prior series knowledge.

The core appeal lies in the unparalleled Gunpla customization. Beyond swapping arms and weapons, players can adjust part size and scale, even combining standard and SD (super deformed) parts for truly unique creations. Builder parts add further layers of customization, each offering unique skills. Combat utilizes EX and OP skills determined by equipped parts and weapons, further enhanced by ability cartridges with various buffs and debuffs.

Missions reward parts and materials for upgrading and enhancing rarity, unlocking additional skills. The game's difficulty is well-balanced, with higher difficulties unlocking as the story progresses. While optional quests provide extra resources, they aren't strictly necessary for standard difficulty playthroughs. Survival mode, a particularly enjoyable optional quest type, is a highlight.

Extensive customization extends to paint jobs, decals, and weathering effects, catering to Gunpla enthusiasts. Gameplay is largely polished, offering satisfying combat even on lower difficulties. Boss battles involve targeting weak points and managing multiple health bars, with a few exceptions where AI presents a challenge. The spectacle of bosses emerging from Gunpla boxes remains consistently engaging.

Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Environments initially appear somewhat lacking, but overall variety is decent. Gunpla models and animations are beautifully rendered, prioritizing style over realism. The soundtrack is inconsistent, with some forgettable tracks and a few standouts. The absence of music from the anime and movies is a missed opportunity.

Both English and Japanese voice acting are commendable, with the English dub proving particularly convenient during action-heavy moments. Minor bugs, including a few Steam Deck-specific issues, exist but don't significantly detract from the overall experience. Online multiplayer functionality remains to be fully tested on PC.

Repetitive mission replay might frustrate players uninterested in grinding for better gear. The PC port shines with its support for over 60fps, mouse and keyboard controls, and multiple controller presets. Steam Deck compatibility is excellent, running smoothly with Proton Experimental.

Platform comparison reveals the PS5 version's superior visuals and performance, while the Switch version suffers from reduced resolution, detail, and performance issues, particularly in assembly and diorama modes. The Switch Lite remains playable, but with noticeable compromises.

The Ultimate Edition's DLC offers additional parts and diorama content, but isn't game-changing. While the story is enjoyable, the game's true strength lies in its customization and combat.

Overall, Gundam Breaker 4 is a spectacular addition to the series, especially for Steam Deck users. Its exceptional customization, engaging combat, and improved accessibility make it a must-have for Gunpla fans and action game enthusiasts alike.
