NVIDIA DLSS 4, Multi-Frame Generation Will Be a Game Changer
Nvidia's DLSS 4: 8X Performance Boost at CES 2025
Nvidia showcased DLSS 4 at CES 2025, a significant upgrade for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs featuring Multi-Frame Generation for up to an 8X performance increase. This innovative technology leverages advanced AI models to generate extra frames, resulting in smoother gameplay and higher resolutions.
DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), a cornerstone of Nvidia's technology, uses AI and Tensor Cores to upscale lower-resolution images, enhancing visual quality while minimizing hardware strain. Constantly evolving over its six-year lifespan, DLSS 4 represents a major leap forward.
Exclusive to the GeForce RTX 50 Series, DLSS 4's Multi-Frame Generation can produce up to three additional frames per rendered frame. Nvidia claims this translates to an 8X performance boost, enabling 4K gaming at 240 FPS with full ray tracing. Furthermore, DLSS 4 integrates transformer-based AI models for the first time in real-time graphics rendering, leading to improved image quality, temporal stability, and reduced artifacts.
GeForce RTX 50 Series and Multi-Frame Generation
The performance gains are achieved through a combination of hardware and software advancements. New AI models boost frame generation speed by 40%, reduce VRAM usage by 30%, and optimize rendering for lower computational costs. Hardware improvements like Flip Metering and enhanced Tensor Cores contribute to smoother frame pacing and high-resolution support. Games like Warhammer 40,000: Darktide already demonstrate the benefits of these improvements. DLSS 4 also incorporates Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution, utilizing vision transformers for superior visual detail and stability, especially in ray-traced scenes.
Backward Compatibility and Wide Game Support
This substantial upgrade boasts backward compatibility, benefiting both current and future RTX users. At launch, 75 games and applications will support Multi-Frame Generation, with over 50 titles integrating the new transformer-based models. Major titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 will have native support, with more to come. Nvidia's application even includes an Override feature to enable Multi-Frame Generation and other enhancements for older DLSS integrations. This positions Nvidia's DLSS as a leading innovation in gaming, delivering unparalleled performance and visual fidelity across the GeForce RTX lineup.
