Space Marine 2 Modders to Add Tau, Necrons, and More; Start with Fishing Mini-Game

Fans of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are buzzing with excitement after the developers at Saber Interactive handed over the keys to their internal editor to modders. This move has sparked hopes that the game could follow in the footsteps of Skyrim, enjoying a long lifespan fueled by user-generated content.

Game director Dmitry Grigorenko shared the news on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, calling it "our biggest milestone yet in supporting the modding community." The release of the official Integration Studio for public use means that modders now have access to the same tools used by the developers for all aspects of gameplay development. This initial release allows modders to manipulate everything from level scenarios and game modes to AI behavior, abilities, melee combo logic, user interface, and HUD elements, making modding for Space Marine 2 more accessible and efficient.

Grigorenko emphasized their commitment to the modding scene, saying, "Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming."

To kick things off, Grigorenko playfully released concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, showcasing what's now technically possible with these tools. Marneus Calgar, the leader of the Ultramarines chapter of Space Marines, is at the center of this humorous concept.

To understand what the modding community plans to do with this powerful editor, I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the modder behind Space Marine 2's acclaimed Astartes Overhaul. After successfully enabling 12-player co-op in the game, Tom now has access to all scripting tools that control mission events and game components like weapons and abilities.

Tom envisions exciting possibilities, such as a roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and face increasingly challenging enemies, with chances to acquire weapons, ammo, and health upon defeating foes. "Killing a Carnifex might grant you a Heavy Bolter," he suggested.

While creating a new cinematic campaign is feasible, Tom noted that cutscenes are more challenging without access to animation tools. However, he's currently working on adding new factions to Space Marine 2, including the Tau and Necrons, which are compatible with existing character rigs.

The modding community is already racing to create the Fishing With Daddy Calgar mini-game that Grigorenko humorously proposed.

The reaction from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Although the game has been well-received and is one of the best-selling Warhammer video games, it features only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. With the modding tools now available, fans can expand the game's universe, especially with the teased Necrons from the campaign.

Redditor Mortwight commented, "This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim," highlighting the potential longevity the modding community could bring to Space Marine 2.

This development is particularly intriguing given Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment's recent announcement of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3. While some fans have expressed concerns about the future of DLC for Space Marine 2, both companies have reassured that they are not abandoning the game. With the modding editor in hand, Space Marine 2 is poised for an even richer future.
