Unreal Engine 6 Wants to Make One Giant Metaverse with All the Games
Epic Games' Ambitious Metaverse Vision: Unreal Engine 6 and Interoperability
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has outlined an ambitious plan to create a unified metaverse using Unreal Engine 6. This vision involves connecting various game ecosystems, leveraging the engine's power and user-friendly tools.
A Collaborative Metaverse Ecosystem
Sweeney's vision centers on an interoperable metaverse, allowing assets and marketplaces from major games built with Unreal Engine (like Fortnite and potentially Roblox) to seamlessly interact. He believes Epic's financial stability allows them to pursue this long-term project. The company intends to invest strategically, adapting to market changes.
Unreal Engine 6: Bridging High-End Power and Ease of Use
The core of this vision is Unreal Engine 6, a planned evolution that integrates the power of the high-end engine with the user-friendly interface of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. Sweeney anticipates this integration will take several years, resulting in a significantly enhanced development environment. The goal is to allow developers, from AAA studios to indie creators, to "build once and deploy anywhere," fostering a truly interoperable metaverse.
This interoperability extends to collaboration with other companies. Epic is already working with Disney to create an interconnected ecosystem, and Sweeney intends to extend similar collaborations to other platforms in the future, although discussions with Roblox and Microsoft haven't begun yet.
A Shared Economy Built on Trust
A key component is a shared economy designed to encourage player investment. Sweeney argues that an interoperable economy builds trust, encouraging players to spend on digital goods knowing their purchases will have lasting value across multiple games.
Epic EVP Saxs Persson echoes this sentiment, highlighting the benefits of a federated metaverse where players can seamlessly transition between different games, keeping communities connected and fostering longevity. The focus is on expanding upon successful elements already present in Fortnite, creating a more inclusive and engaging gaming experience. The ultimate goal is to avoid the single-company dominance seen in other industries, fostering a diverse and thriving metaverse landscape.
