Elven Curse
This simple non-field RPG challenges you to escape a cursed forest. -Prologue- You're the village's best hunter, drawn to a national hunting tournament near the royal capital. Arriving for the opening ceremony, you eagerly enter the forest the following day. Waking after your first night, you discover something unsettling: your camp, and all the other hunters, have vanished. National guards oversee the tournament; yet, the forest is eerily deserted. You cautiously begin your journey, only to discover a disorienting truth – you've unknowingly returned to your starting point. Your usually impeccable sense of direction has failed you, a sign that something is deeply wrong. The forest seems to trap you, regardless of your movements. Fighting panic, you press onward.
-What is the "Elven Curse"?- Aided by a quarter-elf, you, the hunter, must escape the cursed woods. Gameplay is remarkably straightforward, using a maximum of three buttons outside the main menu.
-Character Creation- While character customization is limited, you can freely reroll your stats until satisfied. Status increase rates upon leveling are only visible on this screen, and cannot be checked in-game. This information is accessible from the main menu. When your "talismans" fall below two, and your life force reaches zero, it's game over.
-Foria, the Peddler Quarter-Elf- A mysterious boy (or perhaps something else) encountered in the forest. Despite his childlike appearance, he claims to be older than you and, while seemingly detached, secretly aids your escape using the forest's ancient spirits.
-Scenario and Setting- The prologue unfolds like a visual story, with Foria's dialogue adding a lighthearted contrast to the overall somber atmosphere. The game's world is depicted through understated, suggestive language.
-Exploration Mode- Progress is made by exploring unexplored areas within each section of the forest. The outcome of each exploration attempt is influenced by the area's "fog depth," which is tied to your character's stats. If your life force is depleted, use poison or rare "talismans" strategically, or return to Foria.
-Beast Encounters & Hunter Battles- The forest teems with hostile creatures, from wolves and wild dogs to surprisingly aggressive frogs and rabbits. Defeating them yields materials for trading with Foria. Unlike most RPGs, battles don't grant experience. The goal is escape, and all battles are avoidable (though this requires luck or skillful play). As a hunter, you use a bow and arrow. Maintaining distance allows for safe attacks; closing the gap invites a brutal counterattack. When distant, you can use wound medicine or attack. If caught, you can either attempt a risky withdrawal or use a "flash" ball provided by Foria for a guaranteed escape.
-Cloak & Layering System- Using gathered branches, resin, and leather, you craft a cloak that boosts your abilities. It's lightweight and allows for up to three layers, with the ability boost being the sum of all layers. In rare instances, it can restore your life force. Note that the top layer can be damaged and eventually destroyed. The cloak is the only equipment that changes. Your bow and arrow remain constant.
This isn't just a game; it's an experience. It features: Skill selection from random options, reflex-based gameplay, strategic elements, and a focus on luck and skill. Material collection, synthesis, and alchemy are key. Thorough preparation is rewarded. It's a relaxing game that allows for progress even with casual play.
-Autosave- The game autosaves, but not during battles. For reliable saving, exit to the main menu.
What's New in Version 1.2 (Last updated Dec 18, 2024): v1.2: Fixed a bug causing unexpected transitions to character creation. v1.1: Corrected typos in scenario text. v1.0: Minor bug fixes, some message changes, and added credits. v0.1: Test release.
