Apex Legends Battle Pass Overhauled After Backlash
Respawn Entertainment Walks Back Controversial Apex Legends Battle Pass Changes After Player Backlash
Respawn Entertainment has reversed course on its recently announced, and heavily criticized, Apex Legends battle pass changes. Following significant negative feedback from the gaming community, the developer announced via Twitter (X) that the revised system will not be implemented for Season 22, launching August 6th.
The original plan involved two separate $9.99 battle passes per season, eliminating the option to purchase the premium pass using in-game Apex Coins. This sparked outrage among players, leading to a torrent of negative reviews on Steam and widespread criticism across social media.
Respawn acknowledged the misstep, attributing the negative reaction to ineffective communication. They reassured players that the standard 950 Apex Coin premium battle pass will return for Season 22, alongside promised improvements to game stability and bug fixes detailed in the August 5th patch notes. The developer emphasized its commitment to addressing player concerns, including combating cheaters and enhancing the overall player experience.
The revised Season 22 battle pass structure is now simplified: a free tier, a 950 Apex Coin premium tier, and optional $9.99 and $19.99 Ultimate tiers, each requiring a single purchase per season. This significantly differs from the initially proposed system which required two payments per season for the premium pass.
The initial proposal, introduced on July 8th, involved purchasing the premium battle pass twice per season, at the start and midpoint, for a total of $19.98. This, combined with the removal of the Apex Coin purchase option and the addition of a more expensive "premium+" option, ignited widespread player anger. The overwhelming negative response forced Respawn's hand, demonstrating the significant power of player feedback in shaping game development. While the reversal is welcomed, it underscores the importance of clear communication and careful consideration of player opinions in future development decisions. The community awaits the August 5th patch notes with anticipation, hoping for the promised improvements and a renewed sense of trust in Respawn Entertainment.
