MSFS 2024 Apologizes, Delays Launch Amid Unanticipated Enthusiasm
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch
The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a challenging launch, marked by significant server issues, bugs, and instability. Jorg Neumann, head of MSFS, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed these problems in a YouTube video.
Overwhelmed Servers: The Root of the Problem
Neumann and Wloch explained that while they anticipated high player interest, the sheer volume of users exceeded their expectations, overwhelming the game's infrastructure. The initial login process involves the server retrieving data from a database with a limited cache. While tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far surpassed this, leading to system failures.
Login Queues, Missing Content, and Negative Steam Reviews
Attempts to mitigate the problem by increasing queue size and speed were temporarily successful, but the database cache repeatedly collapsed under the strain. This resulted in extended loading times, often stalling at 97%, and in some cases, missing in-game aircraft and other content. The missing planes were attributed to incomplete data retrieval due to server overload.
The negative reception on Steam, where the game received a "Mostly Negative" rating, reflects these significant launch day issues. Reports ranged from lengthy login queues to missing game assets.
Moving Forward: Addressing the Issues and Apologizing to Players
Despite the setbacks, the development team assures players that they are actively working to resolve the problems. They have implemented solutions to stabilize the server load and are bringing players into the game at a more manageable rate. A formal apology was issued, expressing gratitude for player patience and feedback. Further updates will be shared through official channels.
