Possible Revival of Scalebound Development?

Mar 26,25

Scalebound was once one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a unique system of interaction with a massive dragon companion. This game, announced in 2014, was poised to be a standout Xbox One exclusive, sparking immense interest among gamers. However, despite the anticipation, Microsoft officially canceled its development in 2017, leaving fans disappointed.

Recently, the official Clovers Inc account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya expressed nostalgia for the game's development and pride in the project, despite its cancellation. Kamiya later retweeted the video, tagging Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, with the message: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!" This direct appeal hints at Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving Scalebound. It's not the first time he has voiced his desire to revisit the project; in early 2022, he mentioned wanting to discuss the possibility of resuming development with Microsoft.

Rumors about Scalebound's potential return have circulated frequently, with speculation intensifying in early 2023. Several sources suggested a possible reboot, but Microsoft has yet to make any official announcements. In an interview with Game Watch, Phil Spencer was asked about Scalebound and responded with a smile, saying, "I have nothing to add at this time."

Even if Microsoft shows renewed interest, fans shouldn't expect a swift revival. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is focused on a new installment of Okami at Clovers Inc. If Xbox does decide to greenlight Scalebound, Kamiya would likely only be able to start development after finishing his current project. Despite the years that have passed, the continued discussions and Kamiya's enthusiasm offer hope that one day, players might finally experience the long-awaited release of Scalebound.
