Spider-Man 2 Hits Steam: Low PC Specs Required
Sony's Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has finally made its way to PC as of January 30, marking a highly anticipated release for fans of the web-slinging superhero. While the game's port to PC has been in development for some time, today marks the day we discover just how smoothly it will run on various PC setups.
On the PlayStation Blog, Nixxes Software, the developer behind the port, detailed the numerous PC-specific enhancements included to optimize performance and visual quality across a wide range of hardware. Alongside the announcement, a new trailer was released, showcasing that Spider-Man 2 on PC does not require a PSN account and introduces advanced raytracing features, including DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction.
"In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC with ray reconstruction enabled, we see more detailed ray-traced reflections and better-defined ray-traced shadows, especially when viewing raytracing effects at steep angles," said Menno Bil, a graphics programmer at Nixxes. "We also see improvements in the ray-traced interiors and less ghosting and noise in the ray-traced ambient occlusion."
The game also supports DLSS 3 and FSR 3.1 for upscaling and frame generation, along with Intel's XeSS upscaler. However, DLSS 4's Multi Frame Generation isn't supported by default, though players can potentially use the Nvidia app to upgrade to the newer model for enhanced DLSS 3 frame generation quality.
For those with wider screens, Spider-Man 2 offers ultrawide support up to an impressive 48:9 aspect ratio, with cinematics optimized for viewing up to 32:9.
The system requirements are divided into ray-traced and non-ray-traced configurations. For those not interested in ray tracing, the game can run at 720p and 30 FPS on a modest system with components like an Nvidia GTX 1650, an Intel Core i3 8100, and 16 GB of RAM. For those with higher-end rigs, achieving 4K at 60 FPS with "Ray Tracing Ultimate" settings demands an RTX 4090, an AMD Ryzen 7800X3D, and 32 GB of RAM.
As for running Spider-Man 2 on a Steam Deck, the high RAM and modern GPU requirements make it a challenging prospect, and official Steam Deck verification seems unlikely. Previous titles like Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales were based on PS4 ports, which were more scalable, but Spider-Man 2, being a PS5 exclusive, may push the hardware too far.
The detailed and inclusive system requirements have been well-received online. A Reddit user commented, "This must be the best hardware requirements sheet I’ve seen so far." Another user, ItsMeIcebear4, added, "Honestly, great job. If performance lives up to this, it'll be very well received."
