Stormgate Microtransactions Draw Backlash from Community
Stormgate's Steam early access launch has received a mixed response from fans and backers. This article explores the concerns raised by Kickstarter backers and the game's current state.
Stormgate's Rocky Start
Backer Disappointment Over Monetization
The highly anticipated RTS game, aiming to be a Starcraft II successor, has faced criticism since its Steam release. Despite raising over $2.3 million on Kickstarter (with a $35 million initial funding goal), backers feel misled by the monetization. Those who pledged $60 for the "Ultimate" package expected complete early access content, a promise seemingly unfulfilled.
Many supported Frost Giant Studios' project out of passion, hoping to contribute to its success. While advertised as free-to-play with microtransactions, the aggressive monetization model has left many backers unhappy. A single campaign chapter (three missions) costs $10, and individual co-op characters cost the same – double the price of Starcraft II's. Many backers, having invested significantly, expected full early access gameplay. The addition of a new character, Warz, on launch day, excluded from Kickstarter rewards, further fueled their frustration.
A Steam reviewer, Aztraeuz, summarized the sentiment: "You can take the developer out of Blizzard, but you can’t take Blizzard out of the developer... Why are there pre-day 1 microtransactions that we don’t own?"
Frost Giant Studios responded on Steam, acknowledging the misunderstanding regarding Kickstarter bundle content. They stated that while they attempted to clarify the bundles' contents, many backers anticipated the "Ultimate" package to include all early access gameplay. As a compromise, all Kickstarter and Indiegogo backers at the "Ultimate Founder’s Pack tier and above" will receive the next paid Hero for free (excluding Warz, due to prior purchases).
Despite this, dissatisfaction persists regarding the aggressive monetization and underlying gameplay issues.
Addressing Player Feedback Post-Launch
Stormgate carries significant expectations, developed by Starcraft II veterans. While the core RTS gameplay shows potential, criticisms include aggressive monetization, subpar visuals, missing campaign features, underwhelming unit interactions, and unchallenging AI.
These issues resulted in a "Mixed" Steam rating, with some labeling it "Starcraft II at home." However, reviews also acknowledge the game's potential for improvement in areas like storytelling and visuals. For a comprehensive review, see the link below.
