CD Projekt Red is set to revolutionize NPC development in The Witcher 4, pushing the boundaries of what has been achieved in gaming to date. After receiving feedback on the NPC mechanics in Cyberpunk 2077 and the stereotypical characters in The Witcher 3, the studio aims to craft a world that feels truly alive and vibrant.

In a recent interview, game director Sebastian Kalemba unveiled their innovative approach: "We have a rule: every NPC should look like they are living their own life with their own story." This philosophy is vividly showcased in the first trailer, set in the secluded village of Stromford. Here, the inhabitants adhere to ancient superstitions and worship a forest deity. A poignant scene depicts a young girl adorned with a wreath of twigs, praying amidst the shadows of the forest, only for Ciri to emerge and confront a lurking monster.

Kalemba emphasized the team's commitment to realism: "We aim to make NPCs as realistic as possible - from appearance to facial expressions and behavior. This will create an even deeper immersion than before. We're really trying to set a new bar for quality." The developers are focused on imbuing each village and character with distinct features and narratives that reflect the unique superstitions and cultural intricacies of their isolated environments.

The Witcher 4 is slated for release in 2025, and the gaming community is buzzing with anticipation to see how this ambitious vision for world and character creation will unfold.
