Capcom Tackles High PC Specs for Monster Hunter Wilds
As the release date of February 28 for Monster Hunter Wilds approaches, Capcom is actively considering lowering the recommended GPU requirements to enhance accessibility for a broader range of PC players. This announcement was confirmed by the official German Monster Hunter X/Twitter account, which also disclosed that Capcom is exploring the development of a standalone PC benchmarking tool to help players assess their system's compatibility.
Currently, Capcom suggests a minimum GPU of an Nvidia GTX 1660 Super or an AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT to achieve 30 FPS at 1080p. These minimum settings involve rendering at an internal resolution of 720p and utilizing upscaling technologies like DLSS or FSR on the "lowest" graphics setting to enhance performance.
For those aiming for a smoother experience, the recommended settings for Monster Hunter Wilds target 1080p at 60 FPS, also employing upscaling and Frame Generation technologies. Recommended GPUs include the RTX 2070 Super, RTX 4060, or AMD RX 6700 XT. It's worth noting that among these, only the RTX 4060 supports Nvidia Frame Generation, while the RTX 2070 Super and RX 6700 XT rely on FSR 3, which experienced ghosting artifacts during the previous Monster Hunter Wilds beta.
Digital Foundry advises that for optimal use, Frame Generation technology should target a baseline of 40 FPS in third-person games. Running below 60 FPS with upscaling can lead to increased latency, potentially affecting the game's responsiveness and feel.
During the open beta test of Monster Hunter Wilds, players with lower-end and even mid-range hardware, such as the RTX 3060, faced challenges. A notable issue was a low-LOD bug, preventing the game from loading high-detail textures for characters and monsters, which impacted the visual quality and overall experience.
Monster Hunter Wilds is developed on the RE Engine, which was first introduced with Resident Evil 7 in 2017. This engine has since powered titles like Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter Rise, and Street Fighter 6, generally delivering solid performance across various platforms. However, the RE Engine has faced criticism with larger open-world games featuring numerous NPCs and enemies, such as Dragon's Dogma 2, which encountered performance issues on both consoles and PC. These challenges raise concerns for Monster Hunter Wilds' upcoming release. With an open beta scheduled for early February and a full launch at the end of the month, Capcom's efforts to reduce GPU requirements could be crucial for the game's success on the PC platform.
